December 1st, 2008                                                                  Issue 26

Welcome, Friends!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (everywhere you go, no less). Twinkling lights, festive wreaths, and Christmas trees in front windows warm up both the chilly nights and our hearts. And during this holiday season, FLEET FEET is here to help you give, receive, and be merry!

In the spirit of giving, we invite you to join us on Saturday, December 6th, for Jacob's Run, a "pass the hat" group run to raise money for Jacob Swearingen, a local cross country champion whose family recently lost their home to fire. The running community is pulling together to help Jacob and his family in what is truly a remarkable outpouring of support. Be certain to save the date for this very special event!

Also, come on in to the store for lots of great gift ideas-- from giftcards and coffee mugs to cozy, high-performance apparel items, we've got just what you need for your that special runner in your life. (I mean, how cool would it be to give someone a spot on the FLEET FEET Training Team? Pretty darn cool.)

Plus, we've got a few things we'd like to give you. Join us on Tuesday and Thursday nights for the Sunset Social group runs from our St. Charles and Chesterfield locations for a chance to win great Nike prizes such as fleece hats, gloves, socks, shoe bags, and more. (Hooray for prizes!)

We hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and we hope to see you, soon!

All the Best,
Your Friends at FLEET FEET St. Louis

Jacob's Fun run

Jacob's Run:
A "Pass the Hat"
Group Run
On Saturday, December 6th, 2008, FLEET FEET will host Jacob's Run, a "pass the hat" fun run to collect money and necessities for Jacob Swearingen and his family, whose uninsured home was lost to fire just weeks ago while the Potosi High School senior was winning the Missouri Class 3 Cross Country Championship.

"We were able to salvage a few pictures, but other than that, everything is gone," said Jacob's stepfather, Tim Busse.

What should have been a moment of joy for the defending state champion turned to one of tragedy, and in response, the running community is pulling together to help the young runner and his family rebuild their lives.

Jacob's Run will serve as a fundraising event for Jacob and his family. The run will coincide with FLEET FEET Fenton's regular "Sunrise Social" 5-mile training run, starting at FLEET FEET Fenton at 7AM. Friends of the family will be on-site to collect monetary donations as well as household necessities (dishes, kitchen utensils, towels, linens, etc.). All abilities are welcome, and every donation makes a difference!

Because Jacob's Run is a fundraising group run and not a race, no registration is required and there are no entry fees. The run will not be timed. Jacob's Run will take place at 7AM on Saturday, December 6th, 2008, at FLEET FEET Fenton, 504 Old Smizer Mill Road, 63026 (in Dierberg's Fenton Crossing). Please contact Kristen Murphy with any questions via email or 636-734-0719.

Moreover, if you would like to donate to Jacob and his family but will be unable to participate in Jacob's Run, a fund has been set up for the family at Belgrade State Bank in Potosi. Please make checks payable to Tim Busse. Send checks to Belgrade State Bank, 306 North Missouri, Potosi, MO, 63664. Every dollar makes a difference!

"Thank you to everyone, to the running community, the running family," Jim Busse says on behalf of his family. "We appreciate everything everyone is doing. Thank you!"

FLEET FEET Training Team

Give the Gift That Keeps on Training (Team)!

Looking for that perfect holiday gift for the runner in your life? Hoping to get a jump-start on those inevitable New Year's resolutions? Tired of the drudgery of training alone?

My friend, the FLEET FEET Training Team is just what you've been looking for.

The FLEET FEET Training Team is ready and waiting to prepare for you for the GO!St. Louis Full and Half Marathon-- whether you want to run 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles. Each of our programs is led by experienced and dedicated coaches who are ready to help you reach your personal goals and provide encouragement and support from the first day of class through race day. Training schedules are professionally and specifically designed with the goal distance and pace groups’ abilities in mind. Additional support is provided through weekly training topic discussions, tips from the coaching staff, race-day pacing and support, and a post-race celebration. (Plus, it's just more fun to train with a group!)

"The Training Team was just what I needed to become a runner. The training calender, my pace group, the advice from my coach, and the encouraging emails combined with my personal goal is what got me to where I wanted to be. Crossing the finish line of my first half marathon was the most definitive moment in my running career. As a result of the Training Team, I feel connected to a great group of people-- runners." --Training Team member Kris Weingaertner-HartkeFLEET FEET Training Team Group Pic

Weekly group long runs on Saturday mornings showcase some of St. Louis' best running routes, while optional group runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings coincide with the FLEET FEET Sunset Social runs. (Bonus: We head to a local eatery for food after the runs!) Other perks of the Training Team include running-related seminars-- such as injury prevention, nutrition, and cross training-- and Training Team social events.

The Full Marathon Program begins Saturday, December 13th. The Half Marathon Program begins Saturday, January 24th. For more information, visit the Training Team website or email Kristen.

Training for a marathon or half marathon requires dedication, commitment, and hard work, but it can also be one of the most rewarding endeavors you will ever assume. Whether you are running your tenth marathon or taking your first long distance strides, what better way to take on the challenge than surrounded by the encouragement of friends, the guidance and instruction of coaches, and the motivation and inspiration of fellow runners? (Summary: Go Team!)

The Chesterfield Sunset Socials will take place on Thursday nights at 7PM. Runners will meet at the West Bridge Bank on the north side of Highway 40 at Boone's Crossing. Runners can then choose to run from 3-5 miles on the levee path. After the run, Chesterfield Sunset Socialites will head to East Coast Pizza (across the parking lot from FLEET FEET Chesterfield) for pizza and drinks.
