October 1st, 2008                                                                       Issue 22

O sun and skies and clouds of June
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October's bright blue weather...
-Helen Hunt Jackson

Welcome, Friends! (And Welcome, Fall!)

The fresh, crisp air of autumn has finally arrived, and runners across the St. Louis area are reveling in the cool, golden days of October. It is amazing how quickly a brisk breeze laden with the musk of fallen leaves thrills our senses and makes summer's oppressing heat fade from memory.

And the true attestation that fall has come? The parade of costumed runners masquerading as pumpkins and ballerinas and even cowboys on bucking broncos (courtesy of local, festive 5Ks). Talk about a richly-ornamented landscape!

Whether we see you on the roads at local races or in the store stocking up on cool weather gear, we look forward to sharing this wonderful season with you. So crunch some leaves, build a bonfire, and sip some warm apple cider. It's fall!

Sincerely,
Your Friends at FLEET FEET St. Louis

FLEET FEET Shoe Donation Programs
FLEET FEET St. Louis is dedicated to serving the local running and walking community and providing excellent customer service to each individual. We would also like to introduce you to another passion of ours, our shoe donation programs. Through two outstanding charitable organizations-- Wounded Warriors and Soles4Souls-- FLEET FEET St. Louis has been able to support our country's service men and women as well as provide essential footwear for those in need.

Wounded Warriors, FLEET FEET's newest shoe donation program, strives to meet the needs of wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan recovering at the Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. A serious need at Landstuhl is proper footwear for the soldiers once they begin rehabilitation. FLEET FEET St. Louis, in conjunction with the Reserve Officers' Association, is dedicated to providing new shoes for recovering soldiers at the Landstuhl Medical Center.

Over the past year, FLEET FEET has provided over 150 new, technical shoes-- or over $13,000 worth of shoes in retail value-- to the local Naval Reserve Officers' Foundation for just $15 a pair. These shoes are now being used by soldiers undergoing rehab at Landstuhl. Be certain to check the next Flyer to find out how you can help buy shoes for recovering soldiers at Landstuhl Medical Center!

Soles4Souls    FLEET FEET is also proud to be an official drop-off location for Soles4Souls, a unique charitable organization that distributes gently worn shoes to people in need around the world. Since its inception, Soles4Souls has distributed over 2.6 million pairs of shoes to people in over 40 countries and 5 continents. FLEET FEET customers have contributed greatly to the charity, generously donating hundreds of pairs of shoes every month.

Thank you for helping us support these remarkable programs!

Full Winners

Lewis & Clark Top Finishers

Though flash flooding and the subsequent unsafe course conditions forced the Lewis and Clark Marathon and Half Marathon to be shortened to 10 miles, these runners proved that torrential downpours and 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts couldn't stop them from tearing up the pavement. Congratulations to the top male and female finishers in both the marathon and half marathon categories. Job well done!

Half Winners     We would also like to congratulate all who participated in the Lewis and Clark events. The tempestuous weather provided a stage on which the heart and soul of the running community truly shined. From the race participants to the course volunteers to the brave souls in the crowd, everyone involved rose to the occasion and made the best of some very challenging circumstances. We are honored to be a part of such a wonderful running and walking community, and we heartily congratulate all who competed head-to-head with Ike!

Nike Soft Hand Short Sleeve

Apparel Spotlight:
Nike Soft Hand Short Sleeve and Long Sleeve Tops

We. Love. This. Top. I honestly don't know how Nike makes a fabric this luxurious, but Nike's Soft Hand long sleeve and short sleeve tops are positively the softest high-performance wear on the market. Heidi recently brought in the latest fall colors-- picture rich berry and warm mocha hues-- and we can't help but share the love. This sumptuous fabric is the cashmere of performance apparel, providing a flattering fit while wicking moisture away from the skin.

Nike Soft Hand Long Sleeve   Nike's Dri-FIT technology is the core of the Soft Hand microfiber fabric. The high-performance material not only pulls sweat away from the body, but transports it to the fabric's outer surface where it quickly evaporates. This highly-effective, moisture-wicking system leaves the skin cool and dry, making the Soft Hand top all you need for warm, autumn days and a critical base layer for cold, winter weather. A refined fit and brushed, flat-seam construction creates a soft, feminine fit, ensuring you look as a great as you feel.
